The junior forward scored the game-winning goal to lead the No. 5 Mavericks to the first state soccer championship in the history of the program.
Shanklin, who scored in every playoff game, took advantage when an opposing defender missed a header and he kicked the ball into the net with 15:39 left in the game. An own goal a few minutes later would give the Mavericks a 2-0 victory over No. 7 River Hill in the Class 2A final Wednesday.
Shanklin also scored the first goal and assisted on the game-winner in the 2-1 state semifinal victory over Century. He scored seven game-winners this season as the Mavericks polished off a 19-1 season with 18 straight wins.
He finished the season with 19 goals and five assists, providing six goals and an assist in five playoff games.
Also a basketball and baseball player for the Mavericks, Shanklin was the quarterback for the JV football team last season. He plays club soccer for the 99 Baltimore Union.
